In 2025 Karin Mahlfeld, Frank Climo and David Roscoe published a revision of the New Zealand land snail genus Sinployea in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society. It describes seventeen species, sixteen of them new to science.
The paper places Sinployea and its relatives in the tribe Flammulinini, within the subfamily Charopinae. It links where the species live to the tectonic history of the southwest Pacific, with patterns that follow extinct subduction zones, fault zones and volcanic plateaus.
Each species was given an updated threat ranking under the New Zealand Threat Classification System. Most are naturally uncommon or data deficient, and one, Sinployea australis, is now presumed extinct: it has not been found since the 1980s.
